Immune System

Meaning

The immune system is the complex, highly coordinated biological defense network responsible for protecting the body against pathogenic invaders, foreign substances, and aberrant self-cells, such as those involved in malignancy. It comprises a collection of specialized cells, tissues, and soluble factors that work together to maintain physiological integrity and surveillance. A well-regulated immune response is critical for health, while dysregulation can lead to chronic inflammation or autoimmune disease.
