Immune-Mediated Hepatitis

Meaning

Immune-mediated hepatitis is a clinical condition characterized by inflammation and damage to the liver parenchyma that is primarily driven by an aberrant or excessive immune response. This diagnosis encompasses autoimmune hepatitis, where the body’s own immune cells mistakenly attack hepatocytes, and drug-induced liver injury (DILI) where the immune system reacts to a drug or its metabolite. Timely diagnosis and immunosuppressive therapy are often required to prevent irreversible hepatic failure.
