Immune Dysregulation

Meaning

Immune dysregulation refers to an abnormal or pathological shift in the balance and function of the body’s immune system, resulting in either an inadequate response, as seen in immunodeficiency, or an excessive and misdirected response, characteristic of autoimmunity and chronic inflammation. This loss of immunological homeostasis impairs the body’s ability to appropriately distinguish between self and non-self antigens. Clinically, it underlies a vast spectrum of chronic conditions, including autoimmune diseases, allergies, and susceptibility to persistent infections. The delicate interplay between hormones and immune cells is often a key factor in its manifestation.
