Immune Complex

Meaning

An immune complex is a specific molecular structure formed when an antibody binds tightly and specifically to a soluble antigen, which can be a foreign substance or a self-derived molecule. These complexes are a normal and necessary part of the immune response, facilitating the efficient clearance of foreign materials from the systemic circulation. However, when they are formed excessively or are not effectively cleared, they can deposit in sensitive tissues, triggering inflammation and contributing to the pathogenesis of various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.
