Immune Competence

Meaning

Immune Competence is the clinical measure of the immune system’s capacity to mount an appropriate, effective, and regulated response to antigenic challenges, such as pathogens or abnormal cells. This state reflects a delicate balance between robust defensive capability and the prevention of excessive, damaging inflammatory reactions. Optimal hormonal health is inextricably linked to high immune competence, as endocrine signals profoundly modulate the activity of immune cells and cytokine production. Declining competence is a key feature of immunosenescence and increased susceptibility to illness.
