IL-1β

Meaning

IL-1β is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine, a signaling protein critical for initiating and regulating immune and inflammatory responses. It functions as an alarm signal, alerting the immune system to tissue damage, infection, or cellular stressors. Synthesized as a precursor, this cytokine is then cleaved by caspase-1 to its active form, enabling its biological functions.
