IGFBP-1

Meaning

IGFBP-1, or Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein-1, is a key circulating protein predominantly synthesized and secreted by the liver, whose primary function is to bind and regulate the bioavailability of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1). This protein acts as a critical modulator of the IGF-1 signal, ensuring that only a small fraction of IGF-1 remains unbound and biologically active to interact with its receptors. The circulating concentration of IGFBP-1 is highly dynamic, fluctuating rapidly in response to metabolic cues. This binding protein is an important biomarker for assessing metabolic status and hormonal activity.
