IGF Binding Protein 3

Meaning

Insulin-like Growth Factor Binding Protein 3 (IGFBP-3) is the most abundant carrier protein in the circulation for the Insulin-like Growth Factors (IGFs), particularly IGF-1. Functionally, this protein acts as a reservoir for IGFs, prolonging their half-life and modulating their access to target tissue receptors, thereby controlling the anabolic and growth-promoting effects of the Growth Hormone/IGF axis. Clinically, measuring IGFBP-3 levels is a key diagnostic tool for assessing growth hormone status and related endocrine disorders.
