IGF-1 Level Interpretation

Meaning

IGF-1 level interpretation is the clinical process of evaluating the concentration of Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 in the serum, a key downstream mediator of Growth Hormone (GH) action, relative to established age- and sex-adjusted reference ranges. Since GH is released in pulsatile bursts, IGF-1 provides a more stable, integrated measure of overall GH secretion and activity over time. Accurate interpretation is vital for diagnosing growth hormone deficiency or excess, and for monitoring the efficacy and safety of growth hormone replacement therapy. This assessment requires considering the patient’s nutritional status and liver function, as these factors significantly influence circulating IGF-1 levels.
