IGF-1 Axis Function

Meaning

The IGF-1 Axis Function refers to the coordinated physiological activity of the Growth Hormone (GH) and Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) signaling cascade, which is fundamental for somatic growth, cellular proliferation, and tissue repair throughout the lifespan. Growth Hormone, secreted pulsatilely by the pituitary, stimulates the liver and other tissues to produce IGF-1, which then mediates many of GH’s anabolic effects. This axis is a primary regulator of body composition, bone density, and metabolic health. Decline in the function of this axis is a hallmark of aging, contributing to sarcopenia and reduced regenerative capacity.
