IFN-γ

Meaning

IFN-γ, or Interferon-gamma, is a pleiotropic cytokine primarily produced by T-lymphocytes and Natural Killer (NK) cells, serving as a master regulator of the innate and adaptive immune response. In the context of hormonal health, IFN-γ is a key mediator of inflammation and autoimmunity, and its elevated levels can signal a state of chronic immune activation that may directly interfere with endocrine function, such as contributing to thyroiditis or cytokine-induced resistance to metabolic hormones. It is a critical biomarker linking immune status to hormonal balance.
