Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension

Meaning

Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) is a neurological syndrome characterized by persistently elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure within the skull, leading to symptoms such as severe headaches, pulsatile tinnitus, and vision loss from papilledema. The term “idiopathic” signifies that the underlying cause remains unknown, as it occurs in the absence of a space-occupying lesion, hydrocephalus, or overt structural disease. This condition is clinically recognized to have a strong association with female gender and obesity.
