Idiopathic edema describes unexplained fluid accumulation in interstitial spaces, causing visible swelling without an identifiable medical cause. This diagnosis of exclusion primarily affects premenopausal women, characterized by recurrent, generalized fluid retention lacking clear etiology from cardiac, renal, hepatic, or lymphatic dysfunction. Its unknown origin defines “idiopathic.”
