Idiopathic Edema

Meaning

Idiopathic edema is a clinical condition characterized by recurrent, generalized fluid retention and swelling, primarily in the lower extremities, for which no underlying medical cause can be identified. This diagnosis is typically one of exclusion, made only after thorough endocrinological, cardiac, renal, and hepatic evaluations rule out all known systemic diseases. It is most frequently observed in premenopausal women, often exhibiting a cyclic pattern that suggests a hormonal component.
