ICAM-1

Meaning

ICAM-1, or Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1, is a glycoprotein constitutively expressed at low levels on the surface of various cells, including endothelial cells lining blood vessels and certain immune cells. It is a critical cell surface adhesion molecule whose expression is significantly upregulated in response to inflammatory cytokines like TNF-alpha and IL-1. Clinically, soluble ICAM-1 levels in the blood serve as a measurable biomarker of systemic inflammation and endothelial activation, linking immune response to vascular health. Elevated levels signal a state of vascular distress.
