Iatrogenic Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism

Meaning

Iatrogenic Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism (IHH) is a clinical condition characterized by deficient gonadal function, specifically caused by an external medical intervention or pharmacological agent, rather than a primary disease process. This secondary form of hypogonadism results from the suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, leading to reduced secretion of the gonadotropins, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH). It is most frequently observed in male patients undergoing exogenous testosterone administration, which centrally inhibits the body’s natural production pathway. Recognizing this drug-induced state is essential for appropriate clinical management and for preserving future fertility.
