Iatrogenic Adrenal Insufficiency

Meaning

Iatrogenic adrenal insufficiency describes a condition where the adrenal glands, endocrine organs above the kidneys, fail to produce adequate cortisol, and sometimes aldosterone, due to medical intervention. This state commonly arises from prolonged exogenous glucocorticoid administration, prescribed for inflammatory or autoimmune disorders, suppressing the body’s natural adrenal hormone synthesis.
