Hypothyroidism Skin

Meaning

Hypothyroidism skin encompasses the array of dermatological signs and symptoms resulting from a deficiency of thyroid hormones, a state commonly referred to as myxedema. The classic presentation involves skin that is notably pale, cool, dry, and coarse, reflecting a generalized slowing of metabolic processes and decreased cellular turnover. Other common findings include xerosis cutis, a scaly dryness, and a characteristic puffiness, especially around the eyes and extremities.
