Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Somatotropic Axis

Meaning

The Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Somatotropic Axis (HPS axis) is a crucial neuroendocrine regulatory pathway that controls the synthesis and secretion of Growth Hormone (GH). This axis links the central nervous system’s control center, the hypothalamus, with the master gland, the pituitary, to govern growth, metabolism, and body composition throughout the lifespan. Its function is essential for maintaining muscle mass, bone density, and metabolic homeostasis in adults. Dysfunction in the HPS axis is associated with age-related somatopause.
