Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis

Meaning

The central neuroendocrine system responsible for regulating the body’s response to stress through a cascade involving the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal cortex. Activation leads to the secretion of cortisol, which modulates metabolism, immune response, and blood pressure homeostasis. Chronic dysregulation of this axis is implicated in numerous stress-related pathologies.
