Hypothalamic Obesity

Meaning

Hypothalamic obesity is a severe, often refractory form of pathological weight gain directly caused by damage to the hypothalamus, the critical brain region that centrally regulates appetite, energy expenditure, and hormonal balance. This distinct clinical condition results from the disruption of neural pathways and neuropeptide signaling that normally control satiety and energy homeostasis. It is a distinct entity from common polygenic obesity, frequently resulting from craniopharyngiomas, surgery, or radiation therapy in the hypothalamic area.
