Hypothalamic Hypogonadism

Meaning

Hypothalamic hypogonadism is a clinical state characterized by insufficient production of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, which subsequently impairs the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. This deficiency ultimately leads to reduced synthesis of sex hormones, such as testosterone in males and estrogen in females, by the gonads. It is classified as a form of central or secondary hypogonadism due to its origin within the brain’s regulatory centers.
