Hypothalamic Arousal Syndrome

Meaning

A theoretical clinical presentation characterized by chronic, inappropriate activation of the hypothalamic nuclei responsible for wakefulness and stress response, resulting in persistent hyperarousal, fragmented sleep, and HPA axis dysregulation. This syndrome is distinct from simple insomnia, as it involves a primary central nervous system overactivity that drives a state of physiological vigilance, often leading to elevated nocturnal cortisol and suppressed restorative hormone release. It reflects a fundamental failure of the brain’s sleep-wake switch.
