Hypothalamic Amenorrhea

Meaning

Hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA) is a form of secondary amenorrhea, or the cessation of menstruation, that arises from a functional disruption in the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. This condition is typically triggered by a combination of severe energetic stress factors, including excessive exercise, insufficient caloric intake, and significant psychological stress. The underlying issue is the inadequate secretion of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, leading to a cascade that suppresses ovarian hormone production. It is a critical clinical indicator of energy deficiency and metabolic dysregulation in women.
