Hypogonadism Classification

Meaning

Hypogonadism Classification is the systematic categorization of insufficient gonadal function based on the anatomical location of the underlying endocrine defect. The primary distinction is between Primary Hypogonadism (Hypergonadotropic), where the testes or ovaries themselves are failing, and Secondary Hypogonadism (Hypogonadotropic), where the defect lies centrally in the pituitary or hypothalamus. A third category, Tertiary, sometimes refers to a hypothalamic cause. Accurate classification is the critical first step in clinical management, dictating whether treatment should focus on replacing gonadal hormones or stimulating central hormone release.
