Hypoglycemia Risk

Meaning

Hypoglycemia risk refers to the potential and probability for an individual to experience an episode of abnormally low concentration of glucose in the circulating bloodstream, a state clinically defined by plasma glucose levels typically falling below the critical threshold of 70 mg/dL. This risk is notably elevated in individuals managing diabetes with exogenous insulin or certain classes of oral secretagogues, or in those presenting with specific endocrine pathologies like adrenal or pituitary insufficiency. Recognizing and proactively managing this risk is absolutely critical, as severe hypoglycemia can rapidly precipitate neuroglycopenic symptoms, seizures, and ultimately lead to a loss of consciousness.
