Hyperprolactinemia

Meaning

Hyperprolactinemia is a clinical condition characterized by persistently elevated levels of the hormone prolactin in the blood circulation, exceeding the established physiological reference range. Prolactin, primarily secreted by the anterior pituitary gland, is known for its role in lactation and reproductive suppression. Clinically, this condition often presents with symptoms such as galactorrhea, menstrual dysfunction, infertility, and reduced libido in both men and women. Identification of the underlying cause, which can range from pituitary tumors (prolactinomas) to medication side effects, is essential for appropriate therapeutic intervention.
