Hyperpigmentation

Meaning

Hyperpigmentation is a dermatological condition characterized by the pathological darkening of an area of skin or nails, caused by an excess production or deposition of melanin, which is the primary pigment responsible for skin color. This change in coloration can be localized, such as in solar lentigines or melasma, or generalized across larger areas of the body. The condition is often triggered or exacerbated by hormonal fluctuations, chronic inflammation, certain medications, or significant sun exposure, representing a common aesthetic and medical concern.
