Hyperkyphosis

Meaning

Hyperkyphosis describes an excessive outward curvature of the thoracic spine, extending beyond the typical physiological range, often presenting as a pronounced rounding of the upper back. This postural deviation results in an abnormal increase in the posterior convexity of the vertebral column in the sagittal plane. It represents a significant deviation from optimal spinal alignment, impacting both appearance and function.
