Hyperkyphosis

Meaning

Hyperkyphosis is a structural spinal deformity characterized by an exaggerated anterior curvature of the thoracic spine, where the forward-rounding angle typically exceeds the normal physiological range of 40 to 50 degrees. Commonly referred to as “roundback” or, in severe cases, “Dowager’s Hump,” this condition can compromise pulmonary function, shift the body’s center of gravity, and increase the risk of falls. In hormonal health, it is often a clinical manifestation of long-term skeletal degradation, particularly postmenopausal osteoporosis.
