Hyperinsulinemia

Meaning

Hyperinsulinemia is a clinical condition characterized by abnormally high levels of circulating insulin in the bloodstream, often occurring in the setting of peripheral insulin resistance where target cells fail to respond adequately to the hormone’s signal. This compensatory hypersecretion by the pancreatic beta cells attempts to maintain euglycemia, but the chronic elevation of insulin itself contributes to a range of metabolic dysfunctions. It is a key pathological feature preceding the onset of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and is strongly associated with cardiovascular risk factors.
