Hypercortisolemia

Meaning

Hypercortisolemia is a clinical condition characterized by chronically and pathologically elevated concentrations of the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol in the systemic circulation. This hormonal excess can be a result of endogenous overproduction, such as in Cushing’s syndrome, or a consequence of prolonged, high-dose therapeutic use of synthetic glucocorticoid medications. Sustained hypercortisolemia is profoundly catabolic and leads to a spectrum of adverse metabolic, cardiovascular, and psychological health outcomes.
