Hyperandrogenism

Meaning

Hyperandrogenism is a clinical and biochemical condition characterized by excessive levels of circulating androgens, the primary male sex hormones, in the body. While androgens are present in both sexes, the term most commonly refers to the manifestation of elevated levels in women, leading to distinct physical signs. The clinical presentation often includes hirsutism, acne, male-pattern hair loss, and menstrual irregularities, reflecting the profound influence of these hormones on peripheral tissues. It is a hallmark feature of several endocrine disorders, most notably Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
