Hyperaldosteronism

Meaning

Hyperaldosteronism is an endocrine disorder characterized by the excessive and inappropriate production of the mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone by the adrenal glands. This hormonal excess leads to the retention of sodium and water by the kidneys, resulting in hypertension, and simultaneously promotes the excessive excretion of potassium, causing hypokalemia. It is a common, yet often overlooked, cause of secondary hypertension with significant cardiovascular risk.
