Human Chorionic Gonadotropin

Meaning

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone crucial for the establishment and maintenance of early pregnancy, synthesized initially by the trophoblast cells of the developing embryo. Clinically, its presence in maternal serum or urine serves as the primary biochemical marker for pregnancy detection. In reproductive endocrinology, it is utilized therapeutically due to its structural and functional homology with Luteinizing Hormone (LH) to trigger final egg maturation or stimulate gonadal steroidogenesis.
