HPTA Axis Suppression

Meaning

The clinical phenomenon where the normal feedback loop of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Testicular-Adrenal (HPTA) axis is inhibited, leading to a reduction in the endogenous production of hormones. This suppression is frequently observed when exogenous hormones, such as testosterone or glucocorticoids, are administered, as the high circulating levels signal the hypothalamus and pituitary to decrease their own output of releasing and trophic hormones. Reversing this suppression is a critical phase in post-therapy management. Prolonged suppression can result in testicular atrophy or adrenal insufficiency.
