HPT Axis Suppression

Meaning

HPT Axis Suppression is a clinical state characterized by the pathological or iatrogenic reduction in the activity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid (HPT) axis, leading to diminished production and release of thyroid hormones. This suppression is often evidenced by low or undetectable levels of Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) secreted by the pituitary gland, in response to an excess of circulating thyroid hormone, either endogenous or exogenous. It represents a loss of the normal negative feedback loop, indicating a potential state of hyperthyroidism or overtreatment.
