HPT Axis Dysregulation

Meaning

HPT Axis Dysregulation describes an imbalance or disruption in the intricate neuroendocrine feedback loop that governs thyroid function, known as the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid axis. This tri-glandular communication system is responsible for maintaining metabolic homeostasis throughout the body via the precise secretion of thyroid hormones. Dysregulation signifies a failure in the normal negative feedback mechanism, leading to either excessive or insufficient production of thyroid-stimulating hormone, or TSH, or the peripheral thyroid hormones, T3 and T4. Such a breakdown is a hallmark of various thyroid disorders, including primary hypothyroidism and central hypothyroidism.
