HPO Axis Dysregulation

Meaning

A disruption in the normal pulsatile secretion and feedback mechanisms governing the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Ovarian (HPO) axis, the primary endocrine pathway controlling female reproductive function. Dysregulation manifests as aberrant signaling between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and ovaries, leading to disorders of ovulation, menstrual cycle irregularities, and infertility. This clinical state is central to conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea.
