HPGA Axis

Meaning

The HPGA Axis, an abbreviation for the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal-Adrenal Axis, is a complex, integrated neuroendocrine feedback loop involving four major endocrine glands: the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, the gonads (testes or ovaries), and the adrenal glands. This system represents an expanded view of the classic HPG axis, acknowledging the significant and reciprocal regulatory influence of the stress-response system (adrenal glands) on reproductive function and overall hormonal balance. It is a key regulator of sexual development, fertility, and stress adaptation.
