HPG Axis Suppression

Meaning

HPG Axis Suppression describes the pharmacological or pathological inhibition of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal axis, leading to reduced endogenous production of sex hormones, specifically testosterone or estrogen. This state results from negative feedback overriding the normal GnRH pulse from the hypothalamus or direct pituitary desensitization. Clinically, this is sometimes an intended effect, such as in prostate cancer treatment, or an adverse effect of exogenous hormone use. This represents a critical interruption of the central endocrine signaling cascade.
