HPG Axis Suppression

Meaning

HPG Axis Suppression refers to the clinical or pathological inhibition of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal axis, the central regulatory system for reproductive and sexual hormone production. This suppression results in a decreased output of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus, Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) from the pituitary, and consequently, reduced production of sex steroids like testosterone and estradiol from the gonads. It is a common, and often intended, consequence of administering exogenous sex hormones.
