HPG Axis Sparing Agents

Meaning

A category of pharmacological compounds or therapeutic agents designed to provide the clinical benefits of sex hormone replacement, such as increased libido or improved body composition, without suppressing the body’s natural production of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the pituitary gland. These agents are used to maintain the functional integrity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, thereby preserving endogenous testosterone or estrogen production and often fertility. They are a nuanced approach to hormonal support.
