HPG Axis Inhibition

Meaning

HPG Axis Inhibition is the suppression or dampening of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal axis, which is the master endocrine regulatory system controlling reproductive function and sex steroid production. This inhibition can be physiological, such as the natural negative feedback from high sex steroid levels or the suppression from chronic energetic stress, or it can be pathological, resulting from disease or pharmacological intervention. Clinical manifestations include hypogonadism, reduced fertility, and disruption of menstrual cycles in women or spermatogenesis in men.
