HPG Axis Downregulation

Meaning

HPG Axis Downregulation describes the targeted suppression or significant reduction of signaling activity within the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, the main endocrine system controlling reproductive function and sex hormone production. This clinical state results in a profound decrease in the pulsatile release of Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), subsequently lowering the pituitary secretion of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), and ultimately diminishing gonadal steroidogenesis. It is a calculated therapeutic strategy in certain medical conditions but can also manifest as a significant side effect of specific medications or chronic physiological stress.
