HPG Axis Constraint

Meaning

HPG Axis Constraint refers to a state where the normal, pulsatile function of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal axis is suppressed or inhibited, resulting in sub-optimal production of sex steroids (testosterone, estrogen, progesterone). This constraint often arises from chronic stress, severe caloric restriction, excessive exercise, or underlying illness, placing a significant metabolic burden on the system. Clinically, this leads to symptoms of hypogonadism, including reduced libido, bone density loss, and diminished reproductive function. Identifying and resolving this constraint is crucial for restoring vitality and hormonal balance.
