HPG Axis Antagonism

Meaning

HPG Axis Antagonism describes the significant clinical or physiological phenomenon where the normal, rhythmic function of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis is actively suppressed or blocked by an exogenous or endogenous factor. This powerful antagonism results in a marked reduction of the pituitary’s pulsatile release of Gonadotropins (LH and FSH) and a subsequent, often profound, decline in the endogenous sex steroid production by the testes or ovaries. It is a critical and expected consideration in most forms of sex hormone replacement therapy and in certain aspects of fertility management.
