HPA HPG Coupling

Meaning

HPA HPG Coupling describes the complex, reciprocal regulatory interplay between the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, which governs the stress response, and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis, which controls reproductive and sex hormone function. This bidirectional communication ensures that physiological resources are appropriately allocated between survival (stress response) and reproduction. Chronic activation of the stress axis often leads to the suppression of the reproductive axis, a clinically significant trade-off.
