HPA Axis Suppression

Meaning

HPA Axis Suppression is a clinical state characterized by the diminished functional capacity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis, resulting in an inadequate secretion of endogenous cortisol, often in response to stress. This suppression is most commonly an iatrogenic consequence of prolonged, high-dose exogenous glucocorticoid administration, which overrides the normal negative feedback loop. Clinically, it presents a risk of adrenal crisis if the exogenous steroid is abruptly withdrawn or during periods of acute physiological stress.
