HPA Axis Sensitivity

Meaning

HPA Axis Sensitivity describes the degree to which the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, the central regulator of the stress response, reacts to internal and external stressors. High sensitivity means the axis over-responds to stimuli, releasing excessive or prolonged levels of cortisol and other stress hormones, which can lead to a state of chronic hyperarousal. Conversely, low sensitivity may indicate a state of exhaustion or downregulation. Clinical assessment of sensitivity is vital for understanding an individual’s allostatic load and their capacity to adapt to psychological and physiological demands.
