HPA Axis Responsivity

Meaning

HPA axis responsivity refers to the dynamic and functional capacity of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal axis to appropriately initiate, modulate, and terminate its hormonal stress response. This assessment measures the axis’s sensitivity and adaptability to physiological and psychological stressors, primarily through the regulated release of cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Optimal responsivity indicates a healthy capacity to manage stress and return to baseline homeostasis quickly, whereas blunted or exaggerated responses suggest chronic dysregulation.
